The demand for Open Source Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP OSS) is continously growing. Although there are no license costs, implementation is complex and therefore expensive. User requirements and business processes need to be documented. Role-concepts must be elaborated and implemented and the user training needs to be prepared. Additional software must be linked and operational support needs to be assured.
In light of these efforts, important advantages of OSS ERP such as flexibility and avoidance of vendor-dependencies are often not carefully taken into account. The following paper discusses the problems while implementing ERP systems in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and discusses possible solutions to avoid them by using OSS and an agile implementation method.
